Great mobile apps that are only half useful.

posted by Scott on July 19th, 2010

You’re in an app store, you see an app that looks pretty neat, so you download and install it. You soon realize that its practically useless to you because while it may have thousands of users, the other half that the app is built for is non-existent.

Let’s take a look at OpenTable, a mature mobile app which allows you to make restaurant reservations via your mobile phone. I load it up, it chooses my location by default (or you can enter one) and then I wait for it to list restaurants near me.

I await my results and I get… one restaurant! There is only one restaurant in this city that utilizes this mobile app, so unless I’m in Baltimore, Wash DC or some other major metropolitan area (and I’m sure there are plenty of great places not using this), I have no use for this great app!

With that said, I was pretty excited when I found this app called TabbedOut that lets you open and pay tabs through your phone. Sweet! But then reality sunk in when I clicked on the Locations link on their website and realized that its not even available in my area. Fair enough, start somewhere and grow the app and user-base, I get that. The problem is, however, that even if it was available here, I am not confident that many restaurateurs would use it in their business. That is a real shame, because its an app that I think we’d all enjoy using!

Mobile technology and software are growing at a remarkable pace! It’s not a fad, and it’s definitely not going away. I just hope that we don’t have to wait too long for everyone else to get on-board to welcome it, embrace it and utilize it.

That’s my gentle rant for the day.

The coolest thing I will see today.

So, Tron Lightcycles are now available for purchase AND street legal. And they’re only $35,000. Not bad if you ask me… as long as it does all of the things that it does in the movies; rides walls, bounces off things, makes cool sound and light effects. Hmm…

Tron Lightcycle

Purchase it at eBay. Financing is available!

I can only imagine what Jay Maynard is thinking…

Tim and Court get new toys, don't do any work on Thursday.

Tim and Court are the latest at 2F to get new toys. Tim got the new iPhone and Court got a Canon 5D Mark II that she’s been apparently wanting really, really bad!

Tim’s Blackberry had suffered so much abuse that he could barely even hear out of it anymore, so I know he’s extremely happy to just have a phone that is functional. It’s just too bad that I couldn’t successfully lobby him to get one of the new Android phones. I <3 my Evo.

Here’s a picture of Tim in his pink office.

New places to sleep in the city that never sleeps…

We’re always pulled to stories of smaller is often better, being different and passionate can be “the” product, and of course, reading about buildings being used in a way that not only serves a purpose, but brings them to life.  The NY Times recently ran an article on the growth of boutique hotels that touched on all of these topics. From an online perspective, and a reason why paper doesn’t live up to web in the richness of information,  the NY Times does  “functional” web graphics well. In this case, an interactive map that supports the article and allows users to explore hotel locations, photos and profiles right there within the article. The addition of the interactive map extends the usefulness of the article, and is sure to get visitors to come back for more.  The map, (like the hotels) is elegant, functional, and creates an experience that people will want to (and can) share with others.
